Lack of oversight denting public trust in police

ISLAMABAD, November 27: A Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) report on Sunday said monitoring of 129 police stations from July to September 2011 this year across Pakistan showed misuse of authority and cases of graft denting public trust in police. The report said a large number of police stations were not providing services perhaps due to low, and in some cases, non-existent official oversight mechanisms.

Prices of 26 commodities go down in October 2011

ISLAMABAD, Nov 5: A Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) report on Saturday said compared to September prices of 26 commodities decreased, 19 went up and six remained unchanged in October this year. On average, prices of commodities like wheat, fruits, chicken, some pulses, medical tests and kitchen fuel went down by 5.4% while yoghurt, eggs,chapatti, beef, some pulses and rice varieties registered 8% increase.

Tehsil Level Hospitals Lack Diagnostic and Medical Services

ISLAMABAD, Nov 3: Forty-six Tehsil Headquarter Hospitals (THQs) monitored in 34 districts nationwide in August 2011 were found to be lacking basic medical services, according to a report released by Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) on Wednesday. It said more than half – 57% – of them did not have pathology departments while 40% of the monitored THQs lacked pediatrics and 38% were without gynecology and obstetrics departments.

One-fifth of FIRs registered about thefts, car lifting, robberies and dacoities

ISLAMABAD, Sept 8: A FAFEN crime monitoring report on Thursday said around one-fifth of the FIRs registered in 66 districts across the country in June this year were about thefts, car lifting, and robberies and dacoities. The report said out of the total 39,497 registered FIRs, 7,204 (18%) were about cases of thefts, stealing of vehicles, and robberies. On average, 109 FIRs were registered against these crimes in each of the 66 monitored districts.

Many Prescribed Medicines Unavailable in BHUs

ISLA MABAD, August 25: A FAFEN monitoring report on Thursday said an overwhelming majority of patients visiting 110 Basic Health Units (BHUs) across Pakistan in July 2011 complained about unavailability of free of cost prescribed medicines at in-house pharmacies. FAFEN Governance Monitors noted that 85% of the monitored BHUs had stocks of medicines and 89% were issuing them free of cost to patients.

Gastrointestinal Infections and Scabies Widespread During May 2011

ISLAMABAD, August 21: More than 1.4 million cases of diseases, including widespread instances of gastrointestinal infections and scabies, were reported in 51 districts nationwide in May this year, according to a FAFEN monitoring report released on Sunday. The total number of gastrointestinal infections and scabies cases reported was 437,515 and 211,320 respectively, the highest recorded this year.
