Senate passes five bills, adopts four resolutions during 272nd Session

ISLAMABAD: The Upper House of Parliament passed five bills and adopted four resolutions during its five-sitting 272nd session from January 22, 2018 to January 26, 2018.

The bills passed by the House included the National Commission on the Status of Women (Amendment) Bill, 2017; the Auditor-General’s (Functions, Powers and Terms and Conditions of Service) (Amendment) Bill, 2017; the Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University, Islamabad (Amendment) Bill, 2017; the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan (Amendment) Bill, 2017 and the  National University of Technology Bill, 2017.

The House adopted four resolutions to control the lowering of water table, provide natural gas to areas adjoining gas fields in Sindh, include finality of Prophethood (Aqeeda-e-Khatm-e-Nabuwat) in the syllabus of Muslim students being taught in all educational institutions and express solidarity with Kashmiris on their just struggle for right to self-determination.

Eight private members’ bills were introduced in the House which were referred to the relevant committees for further consideration. These bills were the Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2017 (Amendment of section 364A of PPC and Schedule II of Cr.P.C); the Federal Investigation Commission Bill, 2017; the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Amendment) Bill, 2018 and the National Civic Education Commission Bill, 2017; the National Skills University Islamabad Bill, 2017; the Supreme Court and High Court (Extension of Jurisdiction to Federally Administered Tribal Areas) Bill, 2018; the Regulation of Generation, Transmission and Distribution of Electric Power (Amendment) Bill, 2017 and the Pakistan Power and Infrastructure Board (Amendment) Bill, 2017.

Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani gave 38-minute ruling on operationalization of joint ownership of mineral oil and natural gas; implementation of Article 172 (3) Constitution 1973.

He directed the government to devise a policy as to the extent of involvement of International Donor/Organization into the internal affairs of federation and place the same before the Parliament for approval within a period of two months. Five lawmakers also spoke on it for six minutes.

The Secretary Senate Amjed Pervez informed the lawmakers that the federal cabinet had rejected the recommendation made in a resolution of the Senate to enhance its powers. The Chairman said that this issue would be taken up in the next session.
