Lahore, May 6, 2025: Continuing the advocacy efforts from the previous months, FAFEN’s Shah Hussain Regional Network (SHRN) conducted a rally to raise demand for the early conduct of local government elections in Punjab.
Member organizations of the SHRN expressed serious concerns over the continued absence of elected local governments in Punjab. For this purpose, a rally was organized under the leadership of Regional Convener Dr. Rashid Mahmood Warraich, demanding immediate elections for local governments in Punjab. On this occasion, the participants said that local governments have been established in three other provinces of Pakistan, but unfortunately, local government institutions in Punjab are not functioning properly. The establishment of elected local governments in the country is a constitutional requirement through Articles 7, 32, and 140A of the Constitution of Pakistan, and the people of Punjab province have been deprived of this constitutional right for the past many years. The participants further said that elected local governments are also essential for effective governance in Punjab. All the participants and members of SHRN demanded that local government elections be held immediately in Punjab.
